SWBAT participate in an oral recitation contest by reciting a poem from memory.
SWBAT evaluate oral recitations by listening to peers recite poems.
Vocabulary: physical presence, voice, articulation, dramatization, difficulty, evidence of understanding
Agenda
Jumpstart: Today you will be evaluating how your classmates recite poetry. What qualities are important in public speaking, especially when reciting a poem? How should a speaker stand? What should their voice sound like? Should they act out the words or stand still? Does the level of difficulty matter? How can you tell if a speaker understands their poem?
Poetry Out Loud!
Discuss contest evaluation sheet. Practice evaluating Ms. DeVries’ recitation of the prologue to the Canterbury Tales.
Recite your poem for your small group.
Use the evaluation sheet to grade each of your group member’s performance.
