SWBAT analyze the author’s use of direct and indirect characterization by reading and recording information on a graphic organizer.

Vocabulary: cleft lip, unatoned, sallow, ethnic, Mongoloid, mullah, aficianados, imbecile, hone, beneficient

Essential Questions:  How do we learn what a character looks like? How do we learn about a character’s personality?

  • Jumpstart: Review pages 1-2 of The Kite Runner. Select one CD that stood out to you and write commentary about it. To write commentary, consider what is so striking about the quote. Or, make a prediction.

  • Read Chapters 2-3 (pages 3-23). Take notes on of what we learn about characters (Amir, Hassan, Ali, Baba, Rahim Khan) on the KR Who’s Who? chart.

  • KR Vocab Glossary Ch. 1-7 : Use a dictionary to find definitions of the remaining words. (coup d’etat, guileless, hierarchy, impeccable, integrity, irony, monarchy, morose, nuances, republic, sociopath, viable)
