SWBAT review plot events and characters in Chapters 1-4 by completing a study guide and watching the DVD.

  • Jumpstart: Throughout Chapter 4, we learn more about Amir’s relationship with Hassan. How would you describe their relationship? How does Amir treat Hassan? Find a CD from Chapter 4 that supports your interpretation of their relationship.

  • KR Vocab Glossary Ch. 1-7 due today

  • Watch Chapters 1-4 on DVD (30 minutes)

SWBAT organize information to create a visual representation by working in groups to make a  relationship tree.

SWBAT use resources (a dictionary) to define words by writing definitions on a glossary.

Essential Questions: How are the main characters connected to each other? What do our vocabulary words mean?

  • Jumpstart: Baba tells Amir there is only one sin–theft. “When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of his father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness” (18). Do you agree with Baba? Why or why not?

  • Reading Quiz over Chapter 3 reading homework.

  • Kite Runner Relationship Tree

  • KR Vocab Glossary Ch. 1-7: Use a dictionary to find meanings of the rest of our words.

  • Homework: Read Chapter 4, pages 24-34. Continue taking notes on the characters on the KR Who’s Who? chart.

SWBAT analyze the author’s use of direct and indirect characterization by reading and recording information on a graphic organizer.

Vocabulary: cleft lip, unatoned, sallow, ethnic, Mongoloid, mullah, aficianados, imbecile, hone, beneficient

Essential Questions:  How do we learn what a character looks like? How do we learn about a character’s personality?

  • Jumpstart: Review pages 1-2 of The Kite Runner. Select one CD that stood out to you and write commentary about it. To write commentary, consider what is so striking about the quote. Or, make a prediction.  

  • Read Chapters 2-3 (pages 3-23). Take notes on of what we learn about characters (Amir, Hassan, Ali, Baba, Rahim Khan) on the KR Who’s Who? chart.

  • KR Vocab Glossary Ch. 1-7 : Use a dictionary to find definitions of the remaining words. (coup d’etat, guileless, hierarchy, impeccable, integrity, irony, monarchy, morose, nuances, republic, sociopath, viable)

  • The Kite Runner
