Essential Questions:

  • Jumpstart: A coup d’etat occurs when a group tries to take over the government by force. In The Kite Runner, the monarchy is overthrown and a republic takes its place. Describe the emotions that a child (8-12 years old) might feel in the middle of such a violent event.

  • Turn in March Jumpstarts. Write the amount of points you earned on a sticky note and put the sticky note on your best entry. (12 days x 5 points each = 60 points possible)

  • KR Ch. 1-4 Study Guide

  • Read Chapter 5. 

  • Homework: Read Chapters 5-6 by Friday.

Essential Questions: How are the main characters connected to each other? What do our vocabulary words mean?

  • Jumpstart: Baba tells Amir there is only one sin–theft. “When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of his father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness” (18). Do you agree with Baba? Why or why not?

Essential Questions:  How do we learn what a character looks like? How do we learn about a character’s personality?

  • Jumpstart: Review pages 1-2 of The Kite Runner. Select one CD that stood out to you and write commentary about it. To write commentary, consider what is so striking about the quote. Or, make a prediction.  

  • Read Chapters 2-3 (pages 3-23). Take notes on of what we learn about characters (Amir, Hassan, Ali, Baba, Rahim Khan) on the KR Who’s Who? chart.

  • KR Vocab Glossary Ch. 1-7 : Use a dictionary to find definitions of the remaining words. (coup d’etat, guileless, hierarchy, impeccable, integrity, irony, monarchy, morose, nuances, republic, sociopath, viable)
