Jumpstart: A coup d’etat occurs when a group tries to take over the government by force. In The Kite Runner, the monarchy is overthrown and a republic takes its place. Describe the emotions that a child (8-12 years old) might feel in the middle of such a violent event.

Jumpstart: Throughout Chapter 4, we learn more about Amir’s relationship with Hassan. How would you describe their relationship? How does Amir treat Hassan? Find a CD from Chapter 4 that supports your interpretation of their relationship.

Jumpstart: Baba tells Amir there is only one sin–theft. “When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of his father.
