Agenda

  • Jumpstart: Read the passage below and decide which of the six sentences should be deleted because it is irrelevent. Explain why that sentence doesn’t belong.

    • One of the grandest ships to have sailed the ocean is the RMS Queen Mary. She began her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936, from Southampton, England. The Queen Mary began her travels as a luxury ship with many famous passengers gracing her halls. The ship’s famous passenger list includes Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Mary Pickford, George and Ira Gershwin, and Sir Winston Churchill. In May 1971, the Queen Mary opened her doors to tourists. Transporting celebrities would not be all that she was known for.

  • Jumpstart: In Fiona’s class, the teacher is assigning them a new chapter dealing with the psychology of horror films. Part of their assignment is to write a persuasive essay about horror films in general or an individual horror film. Which of the following sentences would make a solid controlling idea for the essay? Why? Option 1: The Ring is a modern day tale that teaches what true fear really means. Option 2: Because modern film techniques have allowed filmmakers to get more graphic, horror flicks have desentized young American viewers to violence.

    • Write the rough draft of your essay.

    • Effective Essay Writing: Analyze your draft to see if it is effective. Make changes as necessary.

    • Discuss the organization of the paragraphs. What were the topic sentences? What concrete details did the author include?  Was the author’s commentary supported by facts? What was the concluding sentence?

    • Organizing Paragraphs in an Essay: Work in small groups to put an entire persuasive essay in order.

  • AIMS Writing Prompt #2: Complete the prewriting and write a rough draft.
